‘She folded her hands, pleaded for help’: New CCTV footage raises fresh questions around 9-year-old Amaira’s death at Jaipur school

The family has sought tougher action under the Juvenile Justice Act and pointed to the CBSE inspection report, which flagged alleged bullying, dismissed complaints and broader lapses in student safety at the school.

New CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the investigation into the death of nine-year-old Amaira Kumar Meena, with her family alleging the recordings capture the Class IV student making repeated attempts to seek help before she fell from the fourth floor of Jaipur’s Neerja Modi School in November 2025.

The family says the footage strengthens its allegation that Amaira’s visible distress inside the classroom was overlooked despite several attempts to approach her teacher. The child died after falling around 48 feet from the fourth floor on November 1 and was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

The latest claims come days after Rajasthan Police filed a chargesheet on July 2 against the class teacher, principal and school management, invoking negligence charges. Amaira’s family has criticised the chargesheet, demanding that investigators instead invoke abetment to suicide provisions against the class teacher and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act, 2015, against the principal and the school’s owner.

Family says CCTV captures change in Amaira’s behaviour

According to the family’s account, the footage initially shows Amaira attending school as usual. She is seen greeting a classmate before participating in a dance session with other students without displaying any signs of distress.

The family alleges the situation changed after students began passing around a digital slate inside the classroom. They claim the slate was repeatedly shown to Amaira, after which she appeared uncomfortable, embarrassed and gradually withdrew from classroom activities.

Amaira’s father has also alleged that the newly surfaced footage captures students bullying his daughter inside the classroom while lessons were underway.

The recordings, according to the family’s narration, show Amaira approaching her class teacher several times over the next hour. Her family believes she was trying to complain about what had happened.

They further allege that whenever Amaira tried to speak to the teacher, another student also joined the conversation, diverting attention away from her. Instead of being heard separately, Amaira was allegedly asked to return to her seat.

The family says the footage reflects the child’s growing anxiety. They point to moments where Amaira folds her hands while trying to explain herself and later covers her mouth and head, describing her body language as that of a frightened child struggling to make herself understood.

They also alleged that the teacher responded sternly while Amaira failed to get her concerns heard.

Family alleges no one stopped Amaira

According to the family’s narration of the CCTV footage, Amaira eventually walked out of the classroom alone.

The recordings are said to show her moving through the school corridors before heading towards the staircase leading to the upper floors. The family alleges no member of the school staff followed or stopped her before she reached the fourth floor.

Amaira later fell from the fourth-floor railing and was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Amaira’s father has alleged that the school prioritised cost-cutting over student safety, claiming there were surveillance blind spots inside the campus and that several teachers were appointed on contract without the required qualifications. These allegations have not been independently verified.

The family has also sought judicial scrutiny of the investigation, alleging that the police failed to invoke appropriate charges against those named in the case.

CBSE withdrew school’s senior secondary affiliation

Nearly two months after the incident, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) withdrew Neerja Modi School’s senior secondary affiliation, citing what it described as a “complete failure” of the school’s counselling and grievance redressal mechanisms.

Following Amaira’s death, CBSE constituted a two-member fact-finding committee to investigate the incident. The committee submitted its report on November 17, after which the Board issued a show-cause notice to the school on November 20.

The school responded on December 19. After examining its reply, CBSE passed an order on December 30, withdrawing the school’s senior secondary affiliation with immediate effect.

According to the order, the Board found that the school had “grossly violated” mandatory provisions of its Affiliation Bye-Laws and other statutory requirements. It said there had been a “complete failure” of the counselling mechanism and grievance redressal system, resulting in serious lapses affecting student safety.

The Board also concluded that the lapses had adversely affected the mental and physical well-being of students. While students of Classes X and XII were allowed to complete the 2025-26 academic session at the school, CBSE directed that students of Classes IX and XI be shifted to nearby affiliated schools.
